B. 4:1-42 SPIRIT-WITNESS AND SIGNS BRING SOULS TO JESUS

1. 4:1-26 JESUS REVEALS HIMSELF AS BAPTIZER IN HOLY SPIRIT

a. 4:1-3 CONTROVERSY CAUSES JESUS TO DEPART

d. 4:6b JESUS RESTS AT JACOB'S WELL AT NOON

e. 4:7 A woman of :Samaria came to draw water: :Jesus said to her, Give me to drink.

g. 4:9a SURPRISE OF THE SAMARITAN WOMAN AT JESUS' REQUEST

Said therefore the Samaritan :woman to him, How do YOU ask,

being a Jew, drink of me, who am a Samaritan woman?

i. 4:10 CHRIST: A FOUNTAIN OF LIVING WATER

Jesus answered and said to her, If you knew the gift of :God,

and who it is that says to you, Give me to drink;

you would have asked ofhim, and he would have given you living water.


j. 4:11 THE SAMARITAN WOMAN IS PERPLEXED

She said to him, Sir, you have no pail, and the well is deep:

from where then have you the living :water?


k. 4:12 SHE QUESTIONS THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS

me su MEIzon ei tou paTROS heMON IaKOB, hos Edo-ken heMIN to PHREar, kai auTOS ex auTOU Epi-en,

Are you greater than our :father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself,

and his :sons, and his :cattle?


l. 4:13-14 JESUS EMPHASIZES THE CONTRAST

Jesus answered and said to her, Every one that drinks of this :water shall thirst again:

m. 4:15 THE WOMAN REQUESTS JESUS' WATER

The woman said unto him, Sir, give me this :water,

that I thirst not, neither come all theway here to draw.


n. 4:16 He said to her, Go, call your :husband, and come here.

p. 4:17b-18 MANIFESTATION OF THE WORD OF KNOWLEDGE

:Jesus said to her, You said well [that] I have no husband:

18for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband:

this have you spoken truly.


q. 4:19 The woman said to him, Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.

r. 4:20 THE WOMAN SEEKS TO CHANGE THE SUBJECT

Our :fathers worshipped in this :mountain; and YOU say,

HOti en Ie-ro-soLUmois esTIN ho TOpos [5117] HOpou pro-skuNEIN dei.

that in Jerusalem is the place where menought to worship.


s. 4:21 JESUS GIVES A YET MORE STARTLING CHALLENGE

:Jesus said to her, Believe me, woman, that an hour comes, when neither in this :mountain,

nor in Jerusalem, shall you worship the Father.


t. 4:22 SALVATION IS OF THE JEWS

huMEIS pro-skuNEIte ho ouk OIda-te: heMEIS pro-skuNOUmen ho OIda-men;

YOU worship you know not what: WE worship what we know;

HOti he so-teRIa [4991] ek ton IouDAIon esTIN.

for :salvation is from the Jews.


u. 4:23 A HIGH DECLARATION OF TRUE WORSHIP

alLA ERche-tai HOra, kai NUN es-tin, HOte hoi a-le-thiNOI pro-sku-neTAI [4353]

But an hour comes, and now is, when the true worshippers

pro-skuNEsou-sin to paTRI en PNEUma-ti kai a-leTHEIa:

shall worship the Father in spirit and truth:

kai gar ho paTER toiOUtous zeTEI tous pro-skuNOUNtas auTON.

for even such the Father seeks as his :worshipers.


v. 4:24 :God is Spirit: and who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

w. 4:25 THE WOMAN IS BROUGHT BACK TO MESSIAH'S COMING

The woman said to him, I know that Messiah comes that is called Christ:

when HE is come, he will declare to us all things.


x. 4:26 :Jesus said to her, I that speak to you amhe.

NOTE: This passage has an importance beyond what a casual reader will find. 4:10 is the verse containing this enlightening truth. “do-reA” (Gift) is used but 11 times in the NT, and this is its first reference. In pedagogy, according to the “law of first reference”, the basic meaning of a word is found here.


I was brought up on a farm in Langley, BC, Canada during the early days of the Great '29 Depression. When the farm well was previously drilled, workmen inadvertently dropped some pipe down, which became stuck. Ever since, one had to pump the water around this stuck pipe - in a much lesser stream of water than it should have been. I did most of the pumping for two years from 1933-35. 12 cows, 50 sheep, 4 horses, pigs, and our household of 4 needed water. But down in the valley, several hundred feet below our farm on a hill, my friends drilled into the same stream of water. There the pressure lifted water in storage tanks, requiring no pumping. It was an “artesian well” that met their needs. What a break it was for me when electricity came to our farm, and a pump replaced my efforts.


So do I understand the nature of an artesian well versus a well that requires pumping? You better believe it! Now see some of the other references to this “do-reA” (gift) in the NT. Acts 2:38 is the “Peter Package” - two conditions and one promise - that of an artesian well in one's life - following repentance and baptism! Acts 8:20 tells us that this “gift” cannotbe purchased with money - it is freely given to us by God on the basis of Christ's Finished Work! Acts 10:45 and 11:17 reveal that God intends this giftfor us Gentiles - as well as for Jews! It is for the “One New Man”!


Romans 5:15 reveals that this giftis by grace! 5:17 tells us that it is the “gift” of righteousness, imparted to us to make us like Christ; and that we might reignin life through this One who baptizes us into the Holy Spirit.


2 Corinthians 9:15 says, “Thanks to :God for his unspeakable“gift”. Some attribute this to Christ - but it cannot be - because for 10 other references, all commentaries acknowledge it refers to the Holy Spirit as an artesian well - surely then this 11threference is no exception. According to Paul this inward gift of the Holy Spirit explains the hilarious giving of the Corinthian church in chapters 8 and 9.

God loves a cheerfulgiver - Give it all you've got -

He loves to hear you laughing - When you're in an awkward spot!

When the odds add up against you - It's time to shout and sing -

Praise God - To Praise Him is a joyous thing!

This was sung by the “Medical Sisters” back in the late 60's and early 70's.


Ephesians 3:7 explains the secretof Paul's extraordinary ministry. Ephesians 4:7 encourages us to believe also for the grace through this giftto fulfill God's purposes for us. And Hebrews 6:4 warns us not to neglect this heavenly gift, for it may not be possible to renew it for us if left and neglected.


So- did Jesus introduction of this giftmotivate this Samaritan woman? Indeed it did! Immediately she became an evangelist, and won her whole village to the Lord. Many other lessons can be found in this passage. By all means let's search them out. - J.A.W.
